So, at 11:50am on Saturday, February 16th I finally got to see Letters From Iwo Jima. Was it good? Short answer? YES. My dad practically cried throughout the entire movie. It was very graphic, but very, very good. :3 It earned all the awards and nominations it got.
However, I tend to get a little spooked during movies like that so I would tend to cover my ears(to muffle the sound) and only peek during air raids. And I was kinda spooked a little during the grenade part. v___v;; What was really weird about that part, was that while I could barely handle the soldiers taking the grenades and killing themselves, I could handle the lieutenant(I think it was) shoot himself in the head. I could also for some ungodly reason handle it when that one guy basically had his face blown off during the first air raid, but I couldn’t handle it when the one guy got his arm blown off or when people got lit on fire.
I myself only cried during two parts, the first time was when Sam died. That was sad, I don’t care what anyone says(Sam=only american soldier in the entire movie that I had sympathy for). And the second time was when Saigo was telling Kuribayashi about his family. But I did get sad at more parts. I got really sad during Shimizu’s flashback. THAT POOR DOGGY!! *can’t believe that fucking general/lieutenant/whatever the hell that guy was shot that dog because Shimizu wouldn’t* Or the part where they found the two japanese soldiers that surrendered dead. ;__; NINO STARTED CRYING SO I ALMOST CRIED. Or the part where Shimizu was talking about that letter from Sam’s mom, about how he had this picture painted in his head that the americans were barbaric but Sam’s mother’s words were the same as his own mother’s(as Nishi had read the letter to the japanese soldiers). And when the horsie died after the first air raid. ;-;
The theater was completely silent throughout the movie, however my dad and I were laughing during the beginning because Saigo was complaining all the time. “Why don’t we just let the americans have this island? It stinks and it’s full of bugs!” XD I was expecting the movie to be very serious(which for the most part it was) but it was really nice to have Saigo be more laidback and “funny” if you will. Saigo was so perfectly Nino. XDDD
Saigo: *after first air raid* Hey! There’s a lot of cleaning up to do, aren’t you going to help us? HEY!!
Guy: *stands there dead with his face practically blown off*
Saigo: o_____o *slowly looks away*
Nino actually did have that look on his face, he looked as if he was thinking “OH! You’re just…slightly dead…” Saigo was also picked on a bit by Ito in the beginning. So right after he noticed a ton of american ships in the water off shore, he was complaining yet again and saying “Man, why are you guys always picking on me?” Saigo was serious at times, but he was also more of the “lighten the mood” character. While he was serious when needed, he was more happy-go-lucky than the rest of the characters. I’m not going to spoil the ending for anyone, but the ending made me happy. More happy than the first frame after the 2005 part in the movie(where they found the letters). Nino’s face started out the movie, oh baby. <3
Also as this is quite cute to note, I was kind of expecting my dad to call Nino “Ninomiya” but he calls him Nino too. And aaaand! My daddy said Nino was a good actor. :D!! It may not be much, but I guess I’m happy that at least one person in my family likes one of the guys I do. Normally, they just don’t care. XD
